Do I need to mention the most popular social media sites? Probably not, because the likelihood that you have heard about or used Facebook or Twitter is great.

Facebook has over 500 million users, and Twitter has close to 200 million users and YouTube has close to 500 million users. That is a lot of clout.

To put it into perspective:

  • 6.8 Billion people in the world
  • 1.9 Billion use the internet
  • 0.5 Billion use Facebook
  • 0.2 Billion use Twitter

So That is 7.3 % of the population use Facebook and 2.8% use Twitter. Even better, of the internet population, 26.3% use Facebook and 10.5% use Twitter.

We can see that there is great merit in using social media to promote your blog and website. If done correctly - therein lies the trick!

Even with these numbers many feel that Social Media Marketing is for teenagers and not the real world.

Well here are a few points you might consider:

1. Raise Awareness

If no one knows about your blog, then no one will come and read it. What is your reach outside of Social Media. Perhaps 100 – 200 people. Not much when compared to the figures above. Yes I know you won’t reach all of Facebooks users, but you have a good chance of reaching far more than your and my small little personal network outside of Social Media.

2. Establish Yourself

Who are you, what do you do, and why should I read your blog? Building up a blog is more about building trust and integrity. You have a specific skill in a particular niche. How do I know that you are what you say you are. Skilled in your chosen topic or niche.

Social media helps you to build up your brand. So that people can know who and what you are. Use Social Media to build your personal reputation. That way when you write on a particular topic, people will come and read because they know that you know what you are talking about.

3. Check out the competition

Believe it or not, your and my blog are not the only blogs on the internet, let alone the only blogs in our niche.

There is tough competition out there. A good marketing strategy is to check out the competition Learn from them what are they doing correct, what are the doing wrong. How can you and I be different? How can we offer something unique to our readers?

4. Show your humanity

The nature of the internet means that we are so detached from the human beings behind websites and blogs. Social media gives you and I a chance to display our humanity a bit.

Granted it’s not like a real face to face human interaction. But being active on Social Media sites gives people an idea of our character and personality.

They can see our passion, compassion. High moments, and sad moments. They get to see the person behind the blog.

5. Find like-minded people

Friendships and relationships are all about people who share similar interests. Facebook and Twitter are brilliant tools to help us out in finding people from all around the globe, from all walks of life who share similar interests as we do.

Once that relationship has been set up, then the community begins, they will share a greater interest in your and my blog because the subject matter matters to them as much as it does to you.

Conclusion

So how do you use social media? Is it something in your marketing toolbox? Do you think it is actually a waste of time? Which social media sites do you use, and are they effective?
