Microsoft unveiled its premier soon to be flagship product at the Microsoft BUILD event, Window 8.
Microsoft has been revealing a few details about Windows 8 here and there, including a superfast boot time, a user interface optimized for touch and tablets, and an app store.
The Best Windows Yet
I saw a PC boot from cold to operating system within 5 seconds. That was just awesome.
At //BUILD/, previously PDC, executives took a deeper dive on the new OS, which Windows chief Steven Sinofsky said is a "bold re-imagination" of Windows. Windows Redesigned. Windows Connected everywhere, windows on every device.
“Windows 8 is the best of Windows 7, only better, it boosts performance, security, privacy, and reliability”, said Steven Sinofsky .
We saw a glimpse of what the new Windows 8 system is capable of. Windows will run on almost any System on a Chip (SoC), including those from Intel, AMD, and ARM-based systems from Qualcomm, Nvidia, and Texas Instruments. Microsoft promised a "one Windows—many shapes and sizes." This would include support for ARM-based chipsets, x86 devices, touch, and sensors
In short, Windows 8 will scale whether it's running on a 10-inch tablet, or 27-inch, high-def screen.
Metro Style
A familiar look and feel to Windows Phone 7. With the new Metro style layout and panels, I feel right at home.
Microsoft showed off its "Metro" interface, which is very similar to Windows Phone 7 layout. The new Metro style turns your desktop into just another app, with a focus on touch.
Metro apps for Windows 8 will fill the entire screen. Every pixel is used. Yet, each app will still be able to communicate with one another behind the scenes
Connected Everywhere
Then there is the connectivity. Along with Windows Live, everything is connected. Get data from your home PC, or on your Phone, or your laptop, or your Work PC. Whether your data is stored on your PC at Home, or at the office, or on a Skydrive, or somewhere else in the cloud, it is all connected.
Include pictures in your email, no matter where they are stored. Search and attach them, whether they are on your local drive, a Sky drive, whether it sits on your favourite Social media site, or stored on some photo sharing site, you can search and use it.
Windows Store
Then there is the new proposed Windows store. Tightly integrated into Windows 8 and your favourite development toolset. That's right, right into Visual Studio!
A application market place where developers can showcase their beautiful and awe inspiring apps.
Conclusion
The new Windows 8 is going to blow your socks off. It is going to change your perception of computing.
Stay tuned. More to come.
