Why PHP Developers Should Learn C# (.NET)

Do a search on the internet for anything related to C# (.NET) vs PHP and you’re bound to get thousands of pages. With tons of arguments for both sides. What you will notice is a lot of personal bias. PHP guys biting the heads off the C# (.NET) guys, and the C# (.NET) guys retaliating.

The big question is why can’t we all live together and learn the good and bad of each others skill set. Doing so will make you and me such a better programmer and person.

I believe that both C# (.NET) developers and PHP developers should be comfortable with each others language. Read my post on Why C# (.NET) Developers Should Learn PHP

So get rid of your personal bias and reach out and start learning C# and using the Visual Studio IDE.

Here are some reasons why you should.

Marketability

As I mentioned in my previous post. The more skills you have the more marketable you become. Although PHP is a vey popular web language, it is not the only one, nor is it the be all and end all of web programming. Become skilled in other areas. Use the best of those skills to make yourself a better programmer and better person.

Multi-skilled

I mentioned this in my previous post as well. Learning a new language will give you skills you don’t have. Give you a new perspective on how to accomplish certain tasks. I’m a firm believer that one needs to be well rounded, have a full knowledge about web development and programming. Than means I need to be multi-skilled. Being multi-skilled gives me so much more choice to accomplish what I need. This makes me so attractive to clients, as well as gives me the ability to fulfil the clients needs.

RAD. Rapid Application Development

You have to admit that PHP does not have the best IDE around. There are some very accomplished and good PHP IDE’s but none that can rival Visual Studio’s IDE. The IDE of Visual Studio just takes away  a lot of the mundane work. With Two-way tools one can concentrate on functionality development. Visual studio’s two way tools and drag and drop functionality make it so much easier and faster to develop websites.

I can throw my website together within minutes, not having to worry about coding every single line of HTML or CSS. My efforts are then directed to actual functionality.

Having RAD, means lower development times, lower costs happier clients.

Another thing to mention is that the Visual Studio IDE allows you to develop PHP application right inside the IDE. with the use of a great add on called VS.PHP  by JX Software. Here you get all the help and usability of the Visual Studio IDE but with the added ability to develop PHP apps.

Debugging

Every programmer worth their salt should be skilled in debugging. PHP is notoriously difficult to debug. Yes there are great strides in fixing that, and there are some great debugging add-ons. Visual Studio has debugging built straight in. With VS.PHP added, you can now also debug your PHP programmes with ease. Learning C# (.NET) will help you in becoming that well rounded programmer by honing your debugging skills.

Conclusion

Don’t be so pig headed, get over your personal bias. Learning something new. You might be surprised and like it.
