You can’t please everyone, but don’t irritate anyone

If you’ve been blogging for any amount of time, you would have no doubt amassed a few readers. Both loyal and casual readers. Problem is not everyone is going to agree with you. But that’s ok.
The real problem comes when you try to please all your readers. Trying to do this will undoubtedly land you in deep water.
Now I do suffer from this a lot. That is trying to please everyone. I can say from experience that it does not work.
Anyway you don’t want to be a Yes-Man/Yes-Woman. But you do want to be truthful and write with integrity.
So what do you do?
- Realise that you will offend some. That whose whom you do offend might respond. It’s how you handle this response that matters.
- Don’t go out of your way to irritate someone. Even though you might not be able to please everyone, be careful not to irritate someone.
- Target your writing for the most important members of your community. Those whom you cannot please are normally a small minority.
- Make sure your writing benefits your community as a whole.
- Realise that your personal preferences might not be the same as that of your community. If so, keep your community in mind when writing.
- If you are pleasing everyone then you’re doing something wrong.
- Don’t get discouraged. Concentrate on the greater numbers in your community whom you did help.
Your thoughts? Do you try to please everyone? Do you concentrate on the greater community?
