With all the hype surrounding the FIFA 2010 Soccer World Cup, we kind of missed this important announcement.
On Tuesday 8 June Google announced the final release of their new indexing system aptly called Caffeine.
Caffeine is more of an architecture change than a completely new app. Caffeine provides 50 percent fresher results for web searches with a larger indexing database.
From Google; “Caffeine lets us index web pages on an enormous scale. In fact, every second Caffeine processes hundreds of thousands of pages in parallel. If this were a pile of paper it would grow three miles taller every second.”
“Check out how Google search works at the How Google works page.
The Index database is nearly 100 million gigabytes of storage. That’s huge! Think of it as 625 000 160 gig iPods.
Google Caffeine is all about delivering fresh content, be it a blog or forum post or even a news story. The older index had several layers and some were indexed faster than others. The main layer was updated every couple of weeks. Google would analyse the entire web, which would as you could imagine take a long time.
With Caffeine, Google analyses the web in small portions and updates their search index on a continuous basis, globally. As they find new pages, or new information on existing pages, they add it straight to the index. That means you can find fresher information than ever before—no matter when or where it was published.
This has a very significant impact on web pages and blogs that are updated regularly. This means that your blog posts will be available to users more quickly. It also means that Google will favour blogs and pages that are updated with fresh content on a regular basis.
So, have you noticed any speed improvements in searches and the indexing of your pages? Do you think you are getting better search results for your queries?
