Why do you write blog posts? Is there some thing that you hope to achieve by your post? If your blog post has no purpose, why write one at all.

You might say that you are posting just for fun, or that blogging is a hobby. No matter, every post should have a purpose. Whether it is to educate and inform, or whether it is to appeal to the intellect or emotions, your posts need to accomplish something.

Your overall blog might have a well defined purpose and goal. Break that down a bit into each blog post.

What is the purpose?

The purpose of any blog post or blog for that matter will vary substantially. Depending on your overall blog niche, your target audience, you're chosen subject matter, your knowledge on the subject and more.

Can you write down or explain the purpose of your blog post with one sentence. If not, you readers will also find it difficult to figure out the purpose of the post. It will leave the confused and frustrated.

Take your one sentence purpose and put that at the top of the post. Almost like a post mission statement.

A few questions to consider before writing

  • Am I just trying to fill a blank space with meaningless words because I haven’t blogged in 24 hours
  • What is my point
  • What am I trying to say
  • How should this post affect the reader
  • Am I trying to inform and educate, provide facts and knowledge
  • Do I want to appeal to intellect or emotions
  • Am I just advertising my skills
  • Do I want to convert readers into subscribers, loyal readers, friends, etc.
  • Am I dispelling a lie
  • Am I trying to provoke discussion
  • Am I promoting a product or selling something
  • Am I promoting or branding myself

How having a purpose affects your writing

Having purpose to your writings brings so much to the table as far as quality content is concerned. After all Content is King. Good quality content is what is going to make you stand out from the crowd.

Having purpose can affect your writing in the following ways.

  • Keeps your posts structured
  • Keeps you on point
  • Keeps your posts concise with no extra riff-raff
  • Gives you passion and excitement
  • Drives you to write better quality content
  • You inject personality
  • You write from the heart

How having a purpose affects your readers

Realize this one thing, your readers are everything to your blog. How and what you write will affect them ether positively or negatively. A blog and post with no direction, no purpose, will affect your readers negatively.

Having a purpose for each blog post will affect your readers in one or more of the following ways:

  • You will inspire them
  • You will teach them
  • You will encourage them
  • You will make them laugh
  • You will make them cry
  • You will change their way of thinking
  • You will cause them to be inquisitive
  • You will ensure feedback and engagement
  • You will win them over
  • You will leave them coming back for more
  • You will influence them in some way
  • You will leave a legacy

Conclusion

Do you blog with purpose? If not, perhaps that’s the reason why you do not have as many readers or subscribers as you can. Perhaps that’s the reason why your traffic is so low.
