Screen recording or screen casting software is used for recording demonstrations, remote technical assistance, sales presentations, and training. Much like screen capture software, but a little more. Screen recording does just that. Records your screens activities, including mouse movement and sound if any.
Screencasts can be used for describing software features, reporting bugs, or for interactive e-learning. Just as a screenshot is a picture of a user's desktop screen, a screencast is essentially a movie of what a user sees on his or her monitor.

Free screen recording software.
- CamStudio - CamStudio is a very simple and effective screen recording software to capture screen activity to AVI. IT has a built in SWF Producer that can convert your captured AVIs into small Streaming Flash videos (SWFs). You can also record audio from your speakers or microphone.
- Wink - Wink, available for Windows & Linux ,Wink captures screenshots and mouse movements. You can also add annotations to your screencasts. While you are recording you can add voice narrations as well. The screencast can be exported as Flash, PDF or EXE
- Capture Fox – A free Firefox add-on that turns your Firefox browser into a screencasting application. It can record just within the Firefox browser window as well as the entire desktop screen and save it as a video file.
- BB Flashback - The basic screen recorder software is a free download. Record your screen activity with sound as well as your webcam. With one-click you can upload to Youtube and other video sharing sites. You can also save movies as Flash or AVI files
- Techsmith Jing – Jing most well known for still screen capture can also capture screen activity. TechSmith released Jing Pro, a paid premium version of Jing.
- Go View - From the developers of GotoMeeting.com. GoView allows you to do screen recording with audio. As an added bonus you can host your recorded screencast videos for free with no bandwidth limitations.
- Windows Media Encoder – Windows media encoder enables you to convert or capture both live and pre-recorded audio, video, and computer screen images to Windows Media. It is the successor of NetShow Encoder
- Free Screen to Video - Free Screen To Video is a screen recording software tool that allows you to record desktop activity and save it as a video file. You have a few options file formats to save to. Namely Flash (FLV,SWF), AVI or WMV format.
- ScreenToaster – ScreenToaster is a free web based Java Applet screeen recording tool that requires no installation. It can record a movie of your full desktop or just a rectangular portion.
- AutoScreenRecorder – This is a small simple screen recording software which can record your screen to AVI.
Commercial screen recording software.
- Macromedia Captivate – Macromedia Captivate software provides an industry-leading screen recording and video capture software platform to help you create professional-looking video. Beware, like most Macromedia software it is a resource hog.
- Camtasia Studio - From the developers of SnagIt, Camtasia is probably the best screencasting software for Windows.
- Screen Recorder Gold – This is an easy-to-use, fast, and powerful screen video recording software used for recording screen activities into standard AVI video files.
- Total Screen Recorder - Is an easy-to-use, fast, and powerful video capture software. It Supports 5 capture types: random region, window, full screen, fixed size, fixed region.
- iShowU - iShowU is designed to record anything on your screen, instantly — both audio, and video!
- DemoCreator - DemoCreator records the screen activities, mouse movements and keystrokes to create training tutorials, video presentations and screencasts without programming or multimedia skills.
Word of Warning.
Be carful of copyright infringement. While these tools are legal and their use is legal, capturing someone else's website as a screen shot might not be. It is important to be respectful of the Webmasters whose sites you’re taking the screenshots of, that you obey any licenses and that you only use what you need to make your point.
Conclusion.
Whether you want to create Tutorials for your blog, or explain a process, or capture your blogging experience to Youtube. Screen casting or Screen recording is the way to do it. With Vlogging on the uptake, this might be a good start into adding that extra zing to your blog and posts.
