Are Internet Ads Effective?

You either hate them or can't live with out them. Some are obtrusive, some are just plain text. Some are ingenious, and some boring. But what ever you think about internet advertising, it is a multi billion dollar industry.

Recently Adgator released South Africa's own Ad network. Whether it is the only South African Ad network, I am unable to comment on. But one thing is for sure, seems that bloggers around the country feel that it might something to cash in on. I even have Adgator ads on my site.

Advertising has been around for years. It has been a big part of television and print media. Advertising is what makes many companies rich and keeps others afloat. Advertising helps get your product into the mind of the public. With out advertising, we would not be aware of many of the products that are out there at the moment. Yes, when surveyed, many people hate advertising.

Why is it then that many say they hate advertising, whether on TV or on the internet. Why is it that many say they will not click on an internet advert, or that they are so sick and tired of them. Why is it that when the love towards advertising seems to be going down hill, that companies still see great value in advertising.

It seems to be a love hate situation. How many people would love to have a big corporate advertise on their website or blog. Landing one or two such big deals could mean a healthy pay check and good living. Yet how many of those same people actually click on other adverts around the web. I know I would love to have a big advert on my site, but cant remember the last time I clicked on an ad, other than one or two from Google while searching.

The question is, is advertising, or rather, internet advertising profitable? Well the conclusion is that it must be. Otherwise companies would not be doing it. The question is, not whether advertising is working, but what sort of advertising is working.

Advertising seems to be beneficial to large companies. Given the right environment, big corporations will pay thousands if not millions on advertising space. But what about the small guy, who's budget is already stretched to the limit? Should he be advertising? Is it beneficial to him? Will he definitely see some return?

There definitely seems to be a formula that works. But what is it? What type of adverts do you like or are drawn towards? Do you regularly click on Google text ads while searching? Do you click on banner ads on other sites. Is advertising about click through ratios or is it just about presence. The latest in Internet advertising is what we call "Peel away ads" , or "Page peel ads". These ads, when activated, do a sort of page peel to reveal the ad. A small dog ear is visible on a page corner, when the mouse is hovered over it, or the dog ear is clicked, the page peels away to reveal the ad.

See my home page for an example of such an advert. Also my actual exlpanation of this page peel ad can be found on the Page Peel page.

This has been revolutionary in the internet add business. So it seems. But does it work. I would be interested to read your thoughts. Do you like or hate advertising, or are you neutral? Do you take notice of ads? Have you clicked on any? What type of ads do you prefer? Do you prefer Banner Ads, Google type text ads, Page Peel ads, Pop-ups, fly in ads? Do you think internet ads are effective?

Re: Are Internet Ads Effective?

What ads? I use the ad blocker in IE7Pro for Internet Explorer, and Adblock Plus in Firefox, so I rarely see any ads. But then I guess I'm one of the priviledged few who knows about these tools. I'm often shocked at the number of ads I see when using someone else's PC.

My brother ran a Jumping Castle business that effectively made use of Google Adwords, and he subsidised them with ads on his web site. He got a lot of enquiries through the ads, as well as though Google searches. So ads can be part of a bigger picture, along with decent SEO.

Donn,
Just my point. Interesting that you yourself have add blockers, but you have adds, Google and Adgator on your website. I find it interesting that people who put ads on their websites also seek to block other website ads. Is it not a case of do unto others what you would have them do unto you.
Just a thought

Re: Are Internet Ads Effective?

I both advertise and host ads, and both activities are lucrative in the South African context. Certain areas are very competitive (e.g. travel) and you need to know exactly what's going on or you can lose a lot of money, but other areas are an untapped goldmine in South Africa.
