Windows Phone 7: Major Update Coming in January. Are You Ready For It

Nov30

Windows Phone 7I’ve just been given the great opportunity of testing the new Samsung Windows Phone 7 device. Although this actual device is a prototype, I must admit that I quite like what I see.

In testing and doing some research on Microsoft Windows Phone 7 I see that there is a lot of criticism concerning Windows Phone 7 Operating System. Some have merit while some have no merit.

I suppose the biggest of the criticism is the fact that Windows Phone 7 does not have multi-tasking and copy & paste.

These criticisms come on the background of other comparative mobile operating systems like Android and iOS. But let me remind you that Windows Phone 7 is a completely new product built from the ground up. There are going to be things are not in the first release. But believe me they will come.

To this end, there is news circulating around the web that Microsoft is going to release a major Windows Phone 7 update as early as late December, early January. This update is so major that many believe it could have been called “Windows Phone 8”

According to Chris Walsh, the guy who created the ChevronWP7 hack, Microsoft has something big planned for Windows Phone 7 in January, and it looks like Windows Phone 7 may get its first major update since the new OS was launched.

With the software update will come the following updates:

  • Bing turn-by-turn directions, improvements
  • Custom ringer support
  • Copy/Paste
  • Multitasking

MS took 3 months to do what Apple did in 3 years” and “Lets just say the could have called it Windows Phone 8″ says Walsh

So in my recent testing of the new Samsung Windows Phone 7 device (remember it's only a prototype), I’m not too fazed about the so called lack of abilities, mainly the cut & paste and the multitasking. These will come, of that I am sure.

But what I can say so far is that I like what I see. The OS is very fast and very responsive. I think the new Windows Phone 7 is going to be the next big thing in Mobile Operating systems.

It will be interesting to see if the rumour turns out to be true, and if Microsoft are able to release major updates to the platform on a regular basis, if this would change the minds of the critics. Perhaps even convert them over.

Do you think Windows Phone 7 needs a serious update already? What would you ask for in the update?
