Many small business owners are particularly concerned about the web. They generally fall into two categories. Those who have a website, and those who do not have a web site. Both these groups are concerned because they are not generating any business from the web. There is no real return on investment, or RIO.

Those that do not have a website, its obvious, they know why they are not generating business from the internet, but they do not know what do do about it. Then ther are those that do have web site, and are also not generating business from the net, but don't know why.

Both groups need to know the most important part of any small business website. That is a live and updated website. One of the biggest downfalls of any website is that it is not kept up to date. It lies stagnant, dormant. It become old new, old hat. Nobody like old news, or out dated information, or the same information. Once you have visited the site, and come back, if it has not changed, then there is no reason for you to come back again, or encourage others to visit.

Not even the search engines will revisit a site that has not been updated on a regular basis. Why should they?, They already have your old data indexed. They see no new information. They also will be reluctant to present that information to users, when they can find similar information, but info that is more recent. Updated websites prove to the search engines that your site is alive, that it is important, that is is keeping up with the ever changing world out there. A stagnant outdated old website is just a piece of dead matter occupying space in cyberspace. Nobody is interested in dead waste.

The problem resides in the update process. The difficulty, cost, and skills required to update your Web site are more important than anything else. Many have what we call as a "first shot" at their websites. There is nothing wrong with a "first shot". The problem is that we must not leave our site in the stage of "first try". It has to change, it has to evolve, it has to get better and better.

It is imperative that your first try does not sit there, frozen in time, waiting for you to figure out how to update it. Or trying to figure out if it is worthwhile spending what little cash you have to pay the guy who charges you to update it. Because every day it sits like that is costing you money.

So, if you only have enough money to build the Web site and not enough to pay someone to constantly change it for you, then make sure they build something YOU can personally update. And commit to yourself that you will update it, that you will check to see how many people are coming, and how much they are buying. That way you'll know what worked and what didn't every time you change it.

Enter in the role of the CMS, or Content Management System. A CMS is just like any other website, except that it is dynamic, ever changing, and it is self managed. Yes that right, a CMS allows YOU, the owner, to take charge of your site. To be able to update it, add new material or content, delete old content. Effectively you become the administrator of your own destiny.

So if you can type out an e-mail, or construct a document in Wordpad or MS Word. Then you can update and edit your own website.

So whether you have a Web site already that you can't get updated or you have no Web site at all, you are in the same boat. You need to get a Web site that you can regularly modify so that you can make it stink a little less every day, until suddenly you look up and say to yourself, "Wow, this is really starting to work."
