What is blogging all about?

I feel that there are many who have missed the point of blogging. They have seen a few A-list bloggers, seen that they make a huge amount of money by blogging proffessionaly and think that blogging is a good way to make money. Only to fall flat on their face because they did not understand what blogging is all about

Blogging is not about making money, although that could be a nice bonus, it is about being social, having fun, building networks, sharing your thoughts.

Here is a nice little acronym on blog that will help you to remember what blogging is all about.

B - Befriend. Get to know people. Make friends. Build up relationships. If no one reads your blog it's just internet litter clogging up the cyber highway. Building friends and relationships is a top strategy for your blog. Having loyal supporters and readers will not only bring traffic but also be self promoting. After all Blogging does fall into the Social Media category. The emphasis being on Social. Too many people just want to make money, or use blogging as a form of free advertising. Visit other blogs. promote and comment on their blogs

L - Learn. Don't think you know everything because you don't. Want your blog to succeed you have to learn. Learn from the best. Find other bloggers in your niche and learn from them. read their blogs, devour their knowledge, then apply that to your own blog..

O - Officious. Be an official, an authority in your chosen niche. Become a guru. Build up credibility. This will take time, but if you have the patience it will pay off. It also takes commitment. You cannot become a recognized guru in your market by hit and miss. You have to be dedicated in what you do. You also have to love what you do.

G - Give. Blogging and social networking is all about giving rather than taking. If you are into blogging to see what you can get out of it, e.g. how many sales, how much money, etc, then you have missed the boat.  Blogging is all about giving to others. Giving freely of your knowledge, giving freebies that will help others. Giving time. Guest posting on  other blogs.

........and strangely enough, if you do those things, you can actually earn a decent living as a blogger!

I could not agree more, Robert.
People just don't get it. Too much "me first" attitude. Those of us who do understand what blogging is all about will be just fine in the long run.

Re: What is blogging all about?

Great post. I've recently switched from being a faceless, mostly generic blog to really letting my personality come out and using social networking. And it's amazing the difference I'm seeing in traffic, and comments! And yes, it is a numbers game. The more people who come to your blog, and read and enjoy it, the more likely you are to make money. yay! :)

Excellent post Robert. I have also noticed that many people are jumping on the blogging bandwagon and blogging happily for a month or two and quits. Think they missed the point from the start what blogging is all about. Don't forget the nice rank it can give your website too!

Re: What is blogging all about?

Great post. People fall for the get rich quick stuff so easily! My blog is no where near ready for prime time yet, but my "goals" right now are in 6 months I want some kind of proof that someone I'm not related to is enjoying my writing on occasion, and hopefully to be making enough money to cover web hosting.

Already, just in the process of poking around learning about how to have a successful blog, I have met a lot of great people. That's what it's all about!

Nice Acronym. I don't want to get rich quick - slowly is fine by me. The ultimate aim is to have a blog site that people find a useful resource and can benefit from - well, what do you expect from an old hippy!

Love the acronym. This post will deffinately make it into my Weekly Five post tomorrow, and may even find it's way into a featured section of my bi-monthly newsletter.

Sometimes it's something very basic like this that reminds us to focus on community.

I noticed the cool use of the acronym too. It's obvious you're liking blogging more and more. Keep it up!
