The History of the Internet

We all thought, well at least I did, that the US military was totally responsible for the starting and the beginnings of the internet. It turns out that England and France were instrumental in what we have today as the modern internet. The following video is a great presentation which everyone will benefit from.

Fifty years ago the internet was just a vague idea. Networks or Lans were not even in use then. In 1957 the first lan type connection was made.

The US network was sparked by a fear of a nuclear war between the USA and Cuba and was eventually called the ARPANET. Three other networks were developed in addition to ARPANET. RAND in the USA, NPL in England, and CYCLADES in France.

Sir Tim Berners-Lee, at the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, best known as CERN Laboratory, came up with the idea in a research paper about document sharing on March 13, 1989. Sir Tim gave it to his boss at the CERN nuclear research centre, who called it “vague but exciting”. The document, Titled, "Information Management: A Proposal", build on the Standard Generalised Mark-up Language,or SMGL, in an effort to simplify it. It described what is now known as world wide web. As a result, Hyper Text Mark-up Language (HTML), was born. This year, HTML and the internet is twenty years old

Watch the video below for a very informative history lesson of the History of Internet

Enjoy.

Re: The History of the Internet

In the beginning God created the Arpanet. On the second day Satan created spammers and things have been a right royal mess ever since :)

Robert, I didn't know that the UK and France had parallel developments, Mind you, I still have this funny feeling that if some powerful yank got out of bed the wrong side he would bring the whole shebang crashing down around our ears!

Re: The History of the Internet

Kevin,

I have the same fear. for the sake of the Internet, lets all be kind to the Yanks.
But joking aside, it is true that a many of the internet Giants are all Americans. They seem to have taken it and made it their own.
